We often get clients who talk to us about wanting to get their dog neutered to curb some unwanted behaviours such as humping, marking/weeing everywhere and challenging other males.
Some worry about their dog undergoing an “unnecessary” operation and others worry about getting their dog neutered and the behaviours not going away.
Did you know there’s a way to check how your dog would respond to being neutered? Something we recommend if people are worried about the above is chemical castration, and since we have been mentioning this to clients it’s become apparent that a lot of people have never heard about it before, so what is Chemical Castration? What is Chemical Castration?
Chemical Castration is a suprelorin implant, it temporarily suppresses testosterone so you can see if permanent castration will suit your dog.
One of our own walkers, the lovely Emma used this option with her dog, Zeus. Here’s what she had to say –
I was worried like many other owners that the effect of neutering would alter my dogs behaviour for the worse. So I decided to chemically castrate him for 6 months to see whether he would benefit from permanent neutering!
Wow. It was by far the best decision I have ever made, going from a dog who would run off to other dogs, humping, over stimulated, scent marking. To a dog that recalls from every dog, stays by my side, no humping or scent marking! The best thing we ever did. We have done lots of training alongside this, but I have found chemically castrating Zeus has helped us along the way massively. So much so, we went for permanent neutering earlier on this year!
