Admittedly, we are probably a few weeks late with this one! However, with the lovely summer weather we have had (🌧️⛈️☁️) it hasn’t particularly been marvellous picnic weather!

In true British fashion, the kids are back to school this week and we are now due a lovely little heatwave! – well, so the weather team say….

We seem to live in a world where everything is dangerous; to us and our doggos! I am sure i’m not the only one guilty of slipping the dog a little piece of whatever I am eating 🤫, but do we every really consider the impacts that can have on our little bundles of joy?
Well, with that in mind we thought it would be super helpful to pop together a few foods that are great to enjoy when out on a long walk together or when stopping for a little picnic! (Obviously, it goes without saying that human foods aren’t great for our four-legged friends, but given in small quantities they will cause no harm and can be enjoyed as treats!) We are due 🤞🏻 some beautiful weather this weekend, so get out, enjoy it and share a little snack with Fido!

Rule 101: When stopping for a picnic with your pooch, always try and choose a relatively shady spot so they are able to cool down and try to avoid “off-lead” areas as the last thing you want are other dogs running into your babies area, particularly if food is involved!

If you take your dog for a good walk or play session before your picnic, they will be more likely to be calm and sit with you as they will have used up a lot of their energy and will be ready to re-charge. Set up a little water station for your pooch, and set yourself up.
It is important to remember that some common picnic foods like grapes and chocolate are very poisonous for our babies, so we would suggest doing your research and leaving anything DANGEROUS at home, just to be on the safe side in case your pup does get hold of it.

Foods that can be enjoyed by you and your dog at a picnic:

  1. Blueberries – perfectly bite sized to enjoy whilst on the walk as a healthy snack for you and juicy for your doggy
  2. Banana – again, great to eat on the go…oh, and to share
  3. Carrot Sticks/Celery Sticks – these make a great healthy picnic food to go with a dip next to your sarnies, and you can pop some in your dog’s bowl, too!
  4. Sweet potato – these are amazing cooked and chopped up for your picnic salad – when doing your prep, pop some cubes in a little tub – remember to keep them plain for your pup!
  5. Cooked plain chicken/turkey – again, so easy to take a meat dish on your picnic to put in your sandwich/onto a salad – keep some separate for your doggy!
  6. Watermelon Slices – Prep these and pop them into the freezer the day before. They will make the most refreshing pudding for everybody!
  7. Cocktail Sausages/Sausage bites – do we need to say any more…..

And to finish off your sunny day out, check the local ice-cream man! A lot of ice cream vans, particularly in dog-friendly area, now stock dog friendly ice creams. I can promise you, this will put you in your dog’s good books for a loooonggg time!
